There were no support groups for lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender students at the Academy for Young Writers in East New York when Michelle Eisenberg joined the school in 2012. Now, the Brooklyn public school’s first Gender-Sexuality Alliance (GSA), co-founded by Eisenberg, is recognized as one of the best in the country.
